Leadership Recognition

Students

The student population takes an active role in various school-wide events and fundraising for community and international causes. The students participate enthusiastically in the Terry Fox Run in September. In the time leading up to the holiday season, the school supports a number of agencies such as the Snowsuit Fund, Toy Mountain and Operation Christmas Shoe boxes. This winter, the school will take part in a Food Drive to support the North Gower and Area Outreach Food Bank. They actively participate in Jump Rope for Heart each year and take part in other charitable initiatives such as Pass the Baton for Parkinson’s. Our students also show leadership in sports, where they represent our school with honour and distinction at a variety of sporting events. Students are provided other opportunities to be leaders by accepting roles as milk monitors, peer helpers, lunch monitors and bus buddies. In addition to informal recognition on a regular basis, we also acknowledge their contributions in our classrooms, and by various other means: school announcements, phone calls, emails, the school website, newsletters, assemblies, our Principal’s report to School Council, and end-of-year awards ceremonies. As well, we recognize student leadership by incorporating their suggestions in our planning, for instance students determine Spirit Days and propose some of our charitable fundraisers.

Staff

Staff members at Kars on the Rideau Public School have a wealth of professional qualifications. Our Educators exemplify compassion and commitment to improve student performance; they actively participate in numerous Board-wide professional development activities. Our staff members are a professional learning community who collaborate and focus their efforts to improving student performance. Staff development is guided by a School Improvement Plan that targets needs and growth in literacy and numeracy. We recognize both our teaching and support staff leadership via personal interactions, notes of thanks, school announcements, school newsletters, assemblies, performance appraisals, and the Principal’s report to School Council. Many additional resources provide support for student achievement. Teacher specialists, Educational Assistants, Early Childhood Educators, Early Learning Assistants, Custodial personnel, an Office Administrator, an Office Assistant, a School Social Worker, a School Psychologist and a Teacher of the Hearing Impaired are all valuable members of our staff.

Parents/Guardians/Volunteers

Our dedicated School Council is actively involved in providing on-going support to staff and students and contributes generously to support the many initiatives organized by our school personnel. As invaluable partners, our volunteers contribute endless hours of support for the benefit of students in our school through activities such as craft clubs, theatrical productions, School BBQs, the Loonie Toonie Holiday Sale, the Turkey Luncheon, and the Annual Book Fair. They are involved in many fundraising activities which they use to purchase resources such as technological supports, books for our library, and curriculum-based presentations for our students. Our Greening Committee works regularly to maintain and beautify our school grounds by planting, weeding and tending our garden beds. We recognize that our parents enhance the learning experience for our children in considerable ways - we thank our parents, guardians and volunteers on an ongoing basis, and seek opportunities to acknowledge them through school announcements, our Principal’s report to School Council, school newsletters, and our Annual Volunteer Appreciation Event.

Community

Moncion’s Your Independent Grocer in Riverside South and Robinson’s Your Independent Grocer in Manotick donate many food items for the school’s various special events, such as the Welcome BBQ, the Year End BBQ and the Turkey Luncheon at Christmas. The Kars R.A. Centre helps the school by offering a reduced rate for rental of their facilities for our Annual Turkey Luncheon. Other businesses contribute to our community BBQs as well: Tubman Funeral Homes lends us their awnings and BBQs, and Subway provides condiments. In the past, the Greening Committee received $10 000 in grants from the city of Ottawa to plant trees in the adjacent soccer field and school yard. The school has also received grants from Green Apple. Generous donations and sponsorship from both Perkins Lumber and the Marlborough Pub and Eatery have allowed many of our students to attend Ottawa 67s games. We recognize our community partners through our school announcements, school newsletters, school web site, and the Principal’s report to School Council. Members of our community are always welcomed to events, awards ceremonies, the Remembrance Day Ceremony and the Grade 8 Leaving Ceremony.
