Achievement and School Improvement Planning

Measures of Student Achievement and Success

Our school follows the guidelines set out in the OCDSB Policy and Procedures for Student Evaluation. Student achievement is measured in a wide variety of ways. The Provincial Report Card is only one among several means by which teachers report student achievement to parents. Teachers use a variety of assessment methods including observations, rubrics, projects conferences, presentations, tests and culminating tasks. Students in grades 1 to 3 are assessed using GB+ in French and PM Benchmarks in English. Junior teachers are trained in the use of CASI, an assessment tool for junior reading in the English program. French junior teachers are using Évaluation rapide en lecture to assess the junior students’ reading comprehension. All grade 3 and grade 6 students participate in EQAO testing. The school’s EQAO results are included in this document. Agendas are an integral part of the school day. Class and individual checks ensure that all students are following homework guidelines and developing effective study skills.

Student success is regularly recognized through the school newsletter, assemblies, and within the classroom environment. Various formal and informal awards honour achievement in such areas as Academics, Character, Citizenship, Athletics, Arts, and Public Speaking. Students are regularly encouraged to participate in a variety of enrichment contests (e.g., math, geography, Canwest Canspell), as they occur.

School Improvement Plans and Initiatives

The current School Improvement Plan includes strategies to enhance student achievement through a focus on: 1 - student engagement, and 2 -

problem solving and number sense and numeration. Each year, our staff analyzes the school’s EQAO results and reviews student performance results, report cards, GB+, PM Benchmarks, Évaluation rapide and CASI scores.

The school continues to focus on quality programs that will assist the students to improve their knowledge and skills in all areas. School improvement initiatives are strongly supported by the School Council. Best practices in numeracy education have included adopting a three-part problem solving model and applying mathematical concepts to real life contexts. A strong partnership between home and school is developed to ensure success for every child - parent volunteers regularly assist with reading, math and special activities. There is a focus on early identification, whereby at risk-students are provided services to help them achieve success and build self-esteem. To enhance the math program, we focus on “real life” scenarios in problem-solving, with an emphasis on literature based math problems. Use of school agendas, which includes regular correspondence with parents, continues at Kars on the Rideau Public School. Well-stocked resource rooms with a wide selection of leveled books for guided reading and or/novel sets to promote novel studies as an approach to literacy. In support of our numeracy initiatives, students have access to many manipulatives, calculators and other math materials where appropriate. Science materials are also available to support the students’ learning. Resources in the library are continually being built upon to support learning.

As part of our Community of Character initiative, staff and students continue to support the positive and caring atmosphere at Kars on the Rideau Public School, by promoting values such as respect, integrity, responsibility, acceptance, empathy and civility. We ensure that mechanisms are in place for intervention, prevention and support. We increase self-esteem by valuing students as individuals, acknowledging successes and providing opportunities for self-reflection and goal setting. We ensure that character development is embedded in all that we do so that our school continues to be a safe, nurturing and caring learning environment.
